This hike is easily a moderate to difficult class 2. The hike to the tree line is about 3 Miles and then the hike from there to the top is easily a 1.5 mile scree run! Try to get to the trailhead by (at latest) 8:00 to avoid the usual afternoon thunderstorms.
We arrived at the trailhead(11248) at about 7:30. The hike to the tree line is not much to talk about with only a gain of about 800 feet. Right before you start gradually climbing up to the tree line you meet up with the Apishipa Trail. Stay to the left so you don’t hike the Apishipa. Once we arrived at the treeline (12000) we were immediatly faced with the steep rock slope in front of us. From the tree line it took us about 3 hours up. We passed many wierd looking animals and rocks. There is not much of a trail passed the tree line but if you take your time you should be able to find many karins. We were at the top at about 12:00 and the view was amazing. You could barley see or what we identified as pikes peak off in the distance. Looking at another direction you could see the Blanca Massif and all your other surroundings!
The hike from the top to the trailhead took about 3 hours. When we got to the car we were all tired and wanted to get back to Colorado Springs as soon as possible! We were all as tired as you could be.
