Overlook Point (new 13er) conditions

Post by supranihilest »

I wanted to give a conditions update for Overlook Point, one of the newly promoted LiDAR 13ers, but it's not available in the actual CR section of the site (yet!) so list chasers here you go. :)

We didn't start at the Lime Mesa trailhead since we didn't feel like driving the rough road. Instead of hiking FS 081 to the trailhead we took an old, closed road southwest of Lime Mesa. The road runs along the west side of the mesa parallel to FS 081.C and is long overgrown but easy. We hiked over Lime Mesa which is very much worth the side trip - really neat limestone all over it. We dropped off the mesa onto the Lime Mesa trail, which would otherwise come from the trailhead (duh). The trail is super easy to follow and takes you to a pass south of Ruby Lake. From there it's a Class 2 hike to the summit of Overlook Point. Overall stats should be easy, something like 7.5-9 miles round trip and under 2,000 vert considering the trailhead is at 11,400 feet or so. Incredible views of Chicago Basin, Endlich Mesa, Pigeon/Turret/Fifteen group, and more. Undoubtedly one of the most scenic 13ers there is.

Trailhead added here: https://www.14ers.com/php14ers/trailhea ... 2206250932

Needleton Benchmark, Point 12,740, and Overlook Point from Stag Mesa to the south.

Nice!

That reminds me - I've been meaning to dig through the um, *mountains* of LIDAR data to extract a list of the *new* 13ers but anytime I start digging I seem to run out of time before I can get to the bottom of things (or would it be the top?)

Anyone have a handy list made up of the *new* 13ers? (I see some listofjohn links in the different threads but I've never really used that site so it wasn't immediately obvious how to extract the *new* peaks from all the data).

Thanks!

that would be nice. I'm wondering how many "new" 13ers I already climbed by chance. I heard peak 8 in breckenridge became a 13er

Here's a link to LoJ with new rankings:
https://www.listsofjohn.com/PeakStats/s ... &S=CO&R=13

I created a mashup list, LiDAR vs Map elevation, for myself. It has tabs for the promoted and demoted peaks as well: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... Gc/pubhtml#

Sweet, thanks!

So it looks like there are only 5 peaks previously considered 12ers that are now 13ers? Does this list include the unranked peaks?

The list does not include unranked peaks, except for those that were demoted.

Troy's (HikerGuy's) list doesn't show unranked peaks, but Lists of John does, at least where they were analyzed. Go to https://listsofjohn.com/lidar/lidar.php and you'll see there are two sections, a soft-ranked analysis at the top and "other Colorado analysis" at the bottom. Both sections can be sorted by map or LiDAR elevation to determine the full list of demoted or promoted peaks.

Ok, yeah I'm trying to figure out the full extent of new 13ers regardless of whether they're ranked or not. Thanks for the tips - I'll go poke around there when I get a little time...

Hey Ben, nice work! if there was a summit register up there, any chance I signed it? haha. I can't for the life of me remember if I hit this one or the point next to it while rambling aimlessly thru lime mesa territory. pre strava.
