We were able to drive to the summer trailhead, as were several other trucks, 4Runners, and subarus. We didn't need or want flotation. Kelso Ridge was in fine early winter condition. Most of the group used traction, but I did not find it necessary. That said carrying axe and traction is a good idea for this route this time of year. These conditions should hold until the next major forecast snow late next week.

The basin is the most dry I have ever seen it mid-December. Many Novembers there is far more snow.

Hi there!
Thanks for the input. For people without AWD, do you know what's the best option? Is there a way to park before the awd road and then walk to the trailhead?

The typical winter parking is right off I70 at the Bakerville lot.
