I can understand why someone who has done Sawtooth in trail runners and then descends this route would find it miserable. However, it's a terrific way to summit Evans in summer, if you have good waterproof gear to go through the wet willows in the morning. The mud in the marshes can be easily negotiated with waterproof boots, although this section was much better in the afternoon when the willows were dry and there was less puddled mud. There's a clear trail through the entire section of willows and marshes all the way to the gully. Look for the initial turnoff about a tenth of a mile past the creek crossing. I personally wouldn't consider this a bushwhack, since there's a clear path and no need to break your way through the vegetation. Bring a few additional warm layers as well as waterproof gear, as it's cold along the creek and the gully doesn't get the sun until later in the morning. The stretch from the top of the gully to where you join the trail to the ridge is lovely and peaceful.
