Road Difficulty

Paved Road 0   (0=Paved, 6=Very Difficult 4WD)
2WD dirt.

Driving Directions

Drive to the south end of Breckenridge and turn east onto Boreas Pass road. Drive about 3.5 miles up Boreas Pass Road to a parking area where the road turns to dirt. The road is closed here in winter. In summer, continue 6.5 more miles up the 2WD, dirt road to Boreas Pass. There are some signs, a few small buildings, and an old boxcar. This is the trailhead and there is ample parking.

Winter Access

The Boreas Pass road is closed in winter, 6.5 miles below the pass, approximately 3.5 miles up from Highway 9 and right after it turns to dirt. The road is often snow-packed because of the large number of locals who walk the road and people going to the hut on the pass.

Info: Open and plowed to the winter closure, after that snow covered (with lots of dog poop :-( ). Nice and crunchy in the morning, mushy in the afternoon. We boot walked up in the early morning, snowshoed down in the afternoon.

Info: drove E to W yesterday. road still open and mostly dry. a few patches of snow on the West side of the summit, but nothing to impede most vehicles. The road does seem a bit rougher than in years past, but passable by most passenger 2WD cars.

Info: Note for days with heavy rain: the Como side of the pass looks like it stays a lot dryer overall. Breckenridge side had a lot more puddles and spots where it looked like water had flowed over the road last night (plus more switchbacks and dropoffs). Probably not enough to be a major problem but, if in doubt, go down the Como side.

Info: Small amounts of snow, but mostly clear until the next snow, rough 2wd/easy 4wd

Info: Road is dry. Came from Como side. Easily made it in a Corolla, so pretty much anything other than a lambo will be fine

Info: Drove the full length South to North. A few rocky sections on each side, but clearance shouldn’t be an issue for any vehicle. Saw a Prius near the pass. The narrow sections are a little interesting when people in giant trucks decide they need 5’ on the right side of their vehicle and so you end up in the trees to not get in an accident...

Info: From 285 Boreas pass is still closed at the winter closure right after it splits from CR50. The road itself is in great shape and my Mazda 3 could have driven to the pass if the gate was open.

Info: Winter gate still closing Boreas Pass Road from Como side as of 6/8/2019. That’s around 7 miles from the top of the pass.

Info: Boreas Pass open

Info: From the Como side the road was 80%+ snow free. What there was was thin and packed but not icy. Any 4wd or front driver will be fine. Road in great shape - minimal potholes and washboarding.

Info: Pass was open to the top of the pass from both directions (this may change with the snow this weekend)? The ride is smoother from the south/285, a lot more potholes on the Breck side but still doable in a low clearance 2wd.

Info: Road is open and dry. Gets bumpy near the top, not to many holes to avoid.

Info: Pass is still gated 7 miles from summit on the south park side of the pass. Road is in unknown condition past gate. However, a sign on the gate states it wont be open until road is in "dry" condition.

Info: Clear of snow. My Elantra made it to the top easily.

Info: Gate on Fairplay side was still locked. I saw a small sign that said the gate would be opened on June 15th. This gate is a long way from the top of the pass...I feel like I saw a sign that said 8 miles to the pass. Forgive was dark and I was pissed.

Info: Open to the normal winter closure. The parking area is a bit muddy right now and there‘s plenty of dog crap on the snow-covered road for the first couple of hundred yards. Road is snow-covered all the way to the pass.

Info: Road was still open, quite a bit of traffic. Road was snow packed from the winter closure to the pass. Others told us it was open on both sides.
