Mill Castle Trailhead

Range: Elk Mountains
Coordinates: 38.696292335, -107.0505510

Road Difficulty

2WD, easy dirt road 1   (0=Paved, 6=Very Difficult 4WD)
There are bathrooms at the trailhead proper. In dry conditions you can continue another 1.3 miles past the signed trailhead on a somewhat rough road to a gate closure. If driving to this upper gate closure 4WD is not needed but some clearance is desirable.

Driving Directions

From Gunnison, drive approximately 3 miles north on Colorado State Highway 135 and turn northwest onto Gunnison County Road 730. Drive 8.9 miles on Gunnison County Road 730, then turn west onto Gunnison County Road 727. Drive 3.2 miles to the signed trailhead with bathroom and parking lot.

Winter Access

Plowed to the trailhead. Not plowed to the upper gate closure.

Info: My Hyundai Ioniq had no problem getting to the gate closure. There are two steeper sections between the bathroom and the gate that might have been difficult for a low-clearance 2WD vehicle in muddy conditions.
