On June 8th, I had surgery to remove melanoma that left a 4 inch incision above my knee as well as a 2.5 inch incision in my groin to remove a lymph node to make sure the melanoma didn't spread. I was on limited duty while I healed. On June 30, my surgeon cleared me for all activity. My first free day was July 3rd and I headed for the mountains. I was okay with the down time the first week or 10 days but I was ready after that.
I really didn't want to deal with 4th of July weekend crowds so I sought out something more obscure and not too far from home.
PT 13,472A was officially renamed Chipeta Mountain by the Board of Geographic names this spring. The former Chipeta Mountain is now South Chipeta.
Chipeta is in the southern Sawatch just north of Centennial Mt Ouray (named after his wife) Any info I had on Chipeta had an ascent from Marshall Pass. I was out on July 3rd and didn't want to deal with Marshall Pass crowds-enter little known and seldom traveled Pass Creek. A trail leads to Pass Creek Lake. After that route finding is not too bad if you can avoid a miserable swath of blowdowns between the lake and treeline. I took a direct route to the summit with a more leisurely descent following a long grassy tundra below the north ridge. Besides 2 horseman in the last mile I had the rest of the route to myself.
