 Backpacking the West Elk Wilderness

Earlier this month, I hiked a 51 mile loop through the West Elk Wilderness. If you are looking for scenery with plenty of solitude, this is the place. This is one of Colorado's least traveled Wildernesses containing over 175,000 acres and 200 miles of trails

Make sure you are experienced in backcountry travel and confident in your map skills. The trails are often difficult to follow and occasionally disappear altogether. Signage is vague at best and doesn't include any trail names or numbers when there even is a sign. You will be lucky to find others so you're on your own.

I have a thorough trip report detailing my trip and route and about 150 photos at my blog at the link below.

I was looking for a new, uncrowded spot to take my scout troop backpacking this year, all the other places we've gone recently have been way too crowded, thanks!
