My Highest Peak - Mt. Massive

Mt. Massive was my 15th Colorado 14er, and my highest! It's Colorado's second highest peak. I summited this one on Saturday, June 18, 2022 with friends from church Chris and Dustin. We must have dodged the predicted monsoon. It was cloudy and breezy, with none of the high winds I've become familiar with on mountain ridges and summits. The trail traffic was pretty low for a Saturday. The views were spectacular! I learned something important. In spite of hiking a few times a week around home, I need to be in better shape for the biggies. So, a stair-stepping machine or climbing some bleachers need to become routine. Or - I will get a bicycle. I have to re-learn that!

Heading to CO in a few weeks to hike/climb Mt. Harvard.
Was wondering what snow conditions were like.
Doesn't look like there is too much snow from your pictures.
Anything you can tell me would be a great help.

Scarce snow

We had to take only a couple of steps on packed snow at the top. I don't know about the other approach. It looked like there was a little more down that way.

My second highest and favorite

I guess I'm one of these crazies whose Massive is their 1st 14er... but I was young then! Also, hey, not my fault if the day I had planned to do Elbert had a whopping 0% chance of storms and remained so all the time I was up there, so I went for the longer one, and it was memorable. To a point that Elbert the next day felt like meh, and also too crowded. All these years later and many peaks later, I think it remains one of my top favorites, with special mention to Handies for the wildflowers, and to La Plata. Contemplating a repeat soon... and I don't mean a repeat of Elbert!

Up one way and down the other would be sweet, if I were to repeat it. But that's a long trek.

For a Saturday traffic was quite light. But a monsoon was expected. I didn't count, but maybe there were about 20 to 24 people besides us.

I was going to hike Massive that day, but the forecast was not good. I wish that I had given it a go.

Congratulations on #15! That‘s my number as well.

No Monsoon!

Yeah, I really expected we wouldn't get very far before turning around. But driving up the dry road to the trail cheered us up, and the trail wasn't even damp. The clouds had us worried but we truly lucked out that day.
