San Luis-- To eat or not to eat the Elk Duds

Start Time: 6:45 AM
Summit Time: Approx. 10:45AM
Car time: Approx 2 PM
Elevation Gain: Approx 3,400'
Weather: Slightly Windy
Hikers: Mountainmicah83, Cre, Baz Agastus

Due to an unfortunate circumstance, my brother-in-law Cre, was home for the week on Emergency Leave from the military in Germany. I wanted to take him on Castle and Conondrum this weekend for some snow climbing and some good skiing. Making our way through the week, we noticed the weather bumped from NOAA to 70% chance of rain, snow, and thunderstorms. While I may be one to sometimes push the limits in life, 70% is not something I wish to purposely go out in. Thus we changed our plans on the day and peak to San Luis with a weather percentage of 10% chance. Departing Colorado Springs at around 5PM, we arrived at the trailhead in a little under five hours, just before 10 PM. After setting up the tent and readying our gear for the following day, we were in bed by 11 at the Stewart Creek Trailhead. Yes, if you drive a porche, you can drive your car to the TH. Crazy that you can drive your car this far on remote roads and they are so well maintained. So this is where all our tax money is going?

We were going to do San Luis yesterday, but know. Fog and snow and rain.

Hoping to do it in two weeks - and this report will be a great help!

Thank you!

Your report has persuaded my wife to hike this one with me next weekend to kick off my summer hiking season! Thanks again!

I think I ran into you guys...

I was the feller you ran into just below the saddle. You were the only folks I saw all day... The glissading was pretty lame, wasn‘t it?

But, it was a nice hike (albeit long) on good trail.

Happy Hiking,

The trail is about the same as in your review. Bjohnson: the trailhead can be reached with 2wd standard vehicle, you may want to hike from nutras creek if you are wanting to climb stewart while your there.

Thanks for readin all

Globreal- Sorry you couldn't make it with us. I would like to climb with you eventually. and yes Baz will be writing again soon...
Doctor NO- Hope it helps.
Bjohnson17- I wanted Organ but it didn't work out- Ford escort wagon will make it no problem- a few descent campsites at TH and more within 1/4 mile on either side of the turnoff. I recommend the one about 1/4 mile before the TH.
Jason_27- Glad your wife is going- I wanted to take mine on this but it didn't work out this time. Have fun- Descent hike-in and camp spots at about 2 miles in if I remember right.
akmpolsen- nice meeting you out there.
Jim- Glad you liked. I admit, I pumped the saturation a tiny bit, but we are getting more color up there!
Presto- As always thanks for reading. As for the canine- he is only 2 so in doggie years, that's 14. We plan on letting him go wild when he is 3. No telling what kind of crazy TRs he will be writing next year!

for writing this up. I was planning to be on San Luis today, however the weather didn't look to cooperate. It appears that it‘s summer conditions up there now.

Looks like you and the bro had a great day.

And maybe you can let Baz write up the next one!

Nice report. Looking forward to getting down there. May have to hit Organ while I'm there. Looks fun. I really liked the flower pictures. It always amazes me how such beauty springs forth from the rocks.

So from your report it sounds like I can get my Fort Escort wagon to the TH..??.... What is the camping situation like there? Appreciate your experience.
