3 Day Weekend in the San Juans

Spent a 3 day weekend in the San Juans. Weather was the same all three days - perfect and incredible. No snow gear was needed all weekend.

Friday 6/18/10 - Redcloud and Sunshine

Did the loop, up Redcloud over to Sunshine and descended off of Sunshine. Easy route like this the whole way.

Descent off of Sunshine. A bit of scree surfing and then a nice walk out in the valley.

Saturday 6/19/10 - Wetterhorn (southeast ridge) and Matterhorn

Nice trail and gradual ascent the whole way in to the rocks. Carried axes and microspikes, neither were needed.

Fun scrambling on the rock.

Headed to the Matterhorn next - but not along the ridge!

Retraced our route down and rock hopped across the boulder field and then up the grassy ridge to Matterhorn and a bit of rock scrambling at the top.

Sunday 6/20/10 - San Luis (from Stewart Creek)

Drove CO 50 from Lake City to the Stewart Creek TH. Dirt road is in very good condition and some really nice scenery along the way. Took about 2 hours from Lake City.

First 5 miles were an easy walk through the woods.

Above treeline the ascent begins up to the ridge.

Wasn‘t that a great trip!! I just did it W-F, and caught Uncompahgre with Wetterhorn. Don‘t want to jinx this weather by saying anything, but... Wow!

Loved the photos - we got some of the same shots. Isn‘t the SJ incredible!

Nice report and pictures!
We are planning to do some of these peaks this coming weekend. How is the road from Lake City to Silver Creek/Grizzly Gulch? is it passable for an AWD vehicle without too much clearance? I have a Suzuki SX4.

Kitten - it‘s not bad, you should be fine. Just watch for fallen rocks in the road. Have fun!
